1. the transmission of traits from parents to their offspring. Study of the mechanisms and laws of heredity is the basis of the science of genetics. Heredity depends upon the character of the genes contained in the parents’ chromosomes, which in turn depends on the particular genetic code carried by the DNA of which the chromosomes are composed.

2. loosely, the sum of the characteristics transmitted from parents to their offspring.
