axon

n. the long, thin, hollow, cylindrical extension of a neuron that normally carries a nerve impulse away from the cell body. An axon often branches extensively and may be surrounded by a protective myelin sheath. Each branch of an axon ends in a terminal button (also called synaptic bouton or knob, among numerous other synonyms) from which an impulse is transmitted, through discharge of a neurotransmitter, across a synapse to a neighboring neuron. Also called nerve fiber. —axonal adj.

sensitivity training

sensitivity training

a group process focused on the development of self-awareness, productive interpersonal relations, and responsiveness to the feelings, attitudes, and needs of others. The primary method used in sensitivity training is open, unstructured discussion with a leader functioning as an observer and facilitator, although other techniques, such as role play, may be used. Sensitivity training is common in human relations training, with various types of groups (e.g., workers, executives) meeting for different time periods (e.g., once a week, over a weekend).
